Arctic Adventures · Sólheimajökull car park
A two-hour walk with a certified Arctic Adventures guide from the glacier car park to the edge of Sólheimajökull, along the meltwater river to the lagoon, with hot drinks and cookies on the shore. Pick it when someone in your party is too young for crampons, or when you want the glacier up close without stepping onto it.

Look for the yellow Arctic Adventures school bus in the Sólheimajökull car park. After a short introduction you collect a helmet and hiking poles and set off on 2.5 to 3 km of mostly flat gravel path, uneven in places. The route follows a meltwater river towards the lagoon, past moraine ridges the ice left behind, and the guide explains how the glacier formed and why it keeps retreating. At the edge you see the ice front with dark layers of volcanic ash frozen into it. Arctic Adventures puts the lagoon at about 60 m deep, and on some days icebergs that broke off the glacier float on it. Some days, not every day.
Halfway, there is a break on the black sand by the lagoon with hot chocolate or coffee and cookies, then you walk back along the shore to the bus. You stay on the marked trail the whole time and never go onto the ice, so there are no crampons, harness or axe. There is no minimum age; children must stay with an adult, and babies are welcome in a carrier (the path is no good for strollers). It is not wheelchair accessible. Arctic Adventures caps groups at 16 and lists the walk all year.
This is a new listing, so it has no guest reviews yet. It runs from the same base and with the same company as the flagship glacier hike. Parking at the glacier costs ISK 750 (2026, paid through the Parka app within 24 hours). Tours go ahead in rain and wind, and Arctic Adventures cancels with a full refund if the weather makes the walk unsafe. Since the Icelandic Met Office warned on 22 July 2026 of a thinning ice ridge and rockfall at the glacier edge, operators decide each day which route is safe, and they have paused or rerouted tours when conditions demanded it. Check your booking the day before; every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours before.
