David The Guide Iceland · Sólheimajökull car park
A four-hour guided hike on Sólheimajökull with David The Guide, a small Icelandic company that meets you at the glacier car park and leads you around the lagoon and onto the ice. Pick it if you drive yourself and want a smaller group, with a guide who has time for your questions.

You meet at the base camp at the foot of the glacier, in the car park at the end of Road 221. The guide fits you with a harness, helmet and crampons, hands you an ice axe and runs through the equipment and the route. Then you walk around the murky glacier lagoon to the ice. That walk is the part that has changed: the glacier keeps retreating, and in 2026 guided groups walk up to about an hour before the crampons go on. Out of the four hours, plan on roughly 1.5 to 2 on the ice itself.
Boots are your job. The listing says hiking boots are required, warns that athletic sneakers may not fit the crampons, and asks you to contact the provider if you need to rent a pair. Do that when you book, not on the morning. No snacks or drinks are included, so carry water; on the ice you can refill a bottle from meltwater streams when your guide says it is fine. The minimum age is 8, and the hike is not suitable for pregnant women or people with mobility impairments. Parking at the glacier costs ISK 750 (2026, paid through the Parka app within 24 hours).
The route is not technical, but it goes up and down slopes on ice and the weather can turn fast, so wear waterproof layers, gloves and a hat. One guest found the glacier quiet enough that the other tours barely registered. Since the Icelandic Met Office warned on 22 July 2026 of a thinning ice ridge and rockfall at the glacier edge, operators decide each day which route is safe, and they have paused or rerouted tours when conditions demanded it. Check your booking the day before; every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours before.

★★★★★The tour guide, Frank, was really nice, knowledgeable, and very patient... [...] The route isn't very difficult, but you need to be a bit quick-witted and prepared to go up and down slopes at some point, with suitable boots and appropriate clothing! Get ready to take lots of pictures and walk on ice while discovering all the secrets of the glacier!
★★★★★Such a great experience and a lovely guide who helped make it so. Very knowledgeable and with an obvious passion for what she does. We were lucky to have such a beautiful day and it was relatively quiet on the glacier so you didn’t really notice any other tours.
★★★★★[...] Önundur was a fantastic guide for an introductory hike in this environment. He was calm, friendly, and patient, gave clear instructions, and moved us along at a firm but comfortable enough pace that we could actually look around and revel in the grandeur of the ice and panoramic views.

No, not as part of a normal Sólheimajökull hike. The ice cave tours that run all year go into Kötlujökull, by super jeep from Vík.
