From the base camp onto the ice

Icelandic Mountain Guides by Icelandia run this hike from their own base camp in the glacier car park, with its huts by the trail. This listing lets you choose a classic hike or a longer one, in a group of up to 12, with tea, coffee and proper restrooms before you set off.

Guided Glacier Walk from the Base Camp

About this experience

You meet at the Icelandic Mountain Guides base camp in the car park at the end of Road 221, about half an hour's drive from Vík. Free tea and coffee, water and restrooms are there, and boots and rain gear can be rented on site. The guide fits crampons, helmet and harness and hands out ice axes, then leads the group to the glacier. In 2026 Icelandic Mountain Guides describe that access hike as about an hour each way, roughly 2.5 km, so think of the walk in as part of the day.

The listing runs 3.5 to 5.5 hours, depending on the option you pick. On Icelandic Mountain Guides' own site the 3.5-hour hike takes children from 10 and the longer, harder one from 12, and the long one runs spring to autumn only, so in winter check which options show for your date. Each adult may bring only one youth. The group is capped at 12, smaller than the 15 on most hikes here. Food is not included. Parking at the end of Road 221 costs ISK 750 per car (2026, paid in the Parka app).

Since the Icelandic Met Office warned on 22 July 2026 of a thinning ice ridge between two lagoons and of rockfall from Jökulhaus above the trail, operators decide each morning which route onto the ice is safe, and they have paused or rerouted tours when conditions demanded it. Access to the glacier stays open, and guests were posting 5-star reviews from the ice in October 2026. Check your booking the day before. Every tour on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before the start. One more honest note from reviews: a few guests felt the start was rushed. Arrive 20 minutes early, as Icelandic Mountain Guides ask, and the gear-up is calmer.

What guests say

★★★★★

That was absolutely the highlight of our trip! Probably also because the weather was so favorable. We particularly liked the fact that the guide also took us into the crevasses, naturally with the safety measures or safety equipment in place. And climbing out of the crevasses was also a special experience.

We loved every minute. Oskar was a great guide - informative, experienced and safety conscious. [...] Using crampons, ice axe, ropes and harnesses around the ice was an unforgettable experience.

We had a great time. It was rainy and cold, but well worth it. Make sure you take warm gloves, water proof clothes, and high-top hiking shoes. It was an educational and beautiful hike.

Wonderful tour and learned a lot about glaciers. Our guide was funny, knowledgeable, and took lots of great pictures of us! The hike was a bit involved so I wouldn't recommend for someone who is afraid of heights.

Tips before you book

  • Arrive 20 minutes early. Fitting crampons for 12 people takes time, and you will not feel hurried.
  • Rent boots at the base camp if yours are low-cut. High-tops are what guests recommend.
  • Choose the longer option only if you hike regularly. Icelandic Mountain Guides say it is more demanding for young children and occasional walkers.
  • Use the base camp restrooms before you leave. There are none on the ice.
  • Bring a snack and water; food is not included.
