Arctic Adventures · Sólheimajökull car park (Road 221)
The most booked hike on Sólheimajökull: you meet Arctic Adventures at the glacier car park, gear up, walk in through a moss valley and spend the core of the four hours on blue ice striped with black ash. Pick it if you drive the South Coast yourself and want the classic hike with the most-reviewed operator on this glacier.

You meet at the Sólheimajökull car park at the end of Road 221, by the big yellow school bus with Arctic Adventures on the side, ten minutes before your start time. After a safety briefing the guide fits crampons, harness, helmet and ice axe, and the group walks up a moss-covered valley to the ice. Arctic Adventures puts the whole tour at about 4 hours on location and about 6 km of walking over uneven ground. One September 2026 guest timed it at about an hour to the glacier and an hour and a half on the ice, 7 km in all. Expect that split: the walk in is a real part of the day now, because the glacier keeps retreating.
Groups are up to 15 with a certified guide. The minimum age is 8, and the crampons fit shoe sizes EU 35 to 50 only. Boots are not included: sturdy boots with ankle support are mandatory, and you can rent them for ISK 1,500 (EU 36 to 47). Food, drinks and rain gear are yours to bring. Parking at the end of Road 221 costs ISK 750 per car (2026, paid in the Parka app). A Reykjavík pickup option exists on the same listing and turns this into a 13 to 13.5 hour day with Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Reynisfjara.
Since the Icelandic Met Office warned on 22 July 2026 of a thinning ice ridge between two lagoons and of rockfall from Jökulhaus above the trail, operators decide each morning which route onto the ice is safe, and they have paused or rerouted tours when conditions demanded it. Access to the glacier stays open, and guests were posting 5-star reviews from the ice in October 2026. Check your booking the day before. Every tour on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before the start. The tour runs all year and in rain; Arctic Adventures says that if safety is compromised it cancels and refunds in full. There is no ice cave on a normal Sólheimajökull hike, whatever the photos suggest. For a cave, the Katla tour goes into a different glacier, Kötlujökull, from Vík.
Park at the end of Road 221 and find the yellow Arctic Adventures school bus. Rent boots here if you need them.
The guide explains how to walk in crampons and fits your harness and helmet. One guest found the preparation took close to an hour with a full group.
A rocky path up the moss valley to the access point. Be sure-footed here; it is the most tiring part for many.
Crampons on, and the guide leads you between crevasses, ice ridges, meltwater channels and the black ash layers of Katla, the volcano under the ice cap.
Crampons off at the edge and the same path down. Snacks for the drive are a good idea; nothing is sold on the ice.
★★★★★This hike really exceeded our expectations! Our guide Lucas was great, super knowledgeable and set a perfect pace with our group and helped us to get the most out of the day. We were so glad we went ahead despite the bad weather.
★★★★★A great hike to the glacier (about 1 hour), then across the glacier (about 1.5 hours), a total of 7 km. The hike is not too demanding and was manageable for everyone in our group. [...] Really worth it!
★★★★★The glacier hike was a great experience! [...] The only thing I would like to point out is that the pictures show people walking through a cave with blue ice [...] this does not happen on this hike. You go to and onto the glacier, but not through a cave or anything like that. Still a 10/10 experience!
★★★★★Amazing experience, a real trekking on the glaciale and not only a promenade. The guides Maria and Celine gave me good vibes and took care of everyone skilled and beginners.

About 4 hours on location and about 6 km of walking, per Arctic Adventures. Roughly an hour of that is the walk in, and about an hour and a half is on the ice.
No. Boots with ankle support are mandatory and can be rented at the meeting point for ISK 1,500 (EU 36 to 47). Crampons fit EU 35 to 50.
Yes, with day-by-day decisions. Since the Met Office warning of 22 July 2026 operators choose a safe route each morning and pause tours when needed. Check your booking the day before; it cancels free up to 24 hours before.
Not as part of the hike. It goes onto the glacier, not through a cave. Ice caves near here are on Kötlujökull, reached from Vík on the Katla tour.
